Our Story

Mississagua Decks & Trim is the result of a wealth of experience in woodworking, from finish carpentry to deck building. Created in 2016, it is the manifestation of the goals of John Morrissey, who originally hails from Clonmel, a small town in Tipperary, Ireland, a place that instilled a strong sense of community in him. Years later, his custom outdoor living space and deck installation business offers up the perfect combination of his and his team’s knowledge and skill, delivered with that same sense of community.

The story of Mississagua Decks & Trim began long before 2016, with the story of John’s own initial foray into and subsequent journey with woodworking. In his high school years, he was drawn to the craft, enrolling in a year-long pre-apprentice class, fascinated by what could be created out of an ordinary piece of wood. In 2003 at the age of 19, he was taken under the wing of a local builder as an apprentice carpenter. Under the guiding and highly demanding hand of this skilled tradesman, John learned the value of doing things correctly from the start. His mentor showed him that flawless work is the standard and not the exception.  Long after his apprenticeship was over he stayed on and would continue to learn from his employer for five more years to these same exacting standards, a quality he would later make the foundation of Mississagua Decks & Trim.

In 2008 he started his own business in Ireland, generating an excellent reputation for his skill and attention to detail. However, in 2011, his sense of adventure drove him to set out for Canada. Here he started work as a decking contractor.

The very first two decks he worked on set the tone for his future approach to offering custom and unique design capabilities to clients. These decks were custom made from Ipe and Jatoba, dense exotic hardwoods, which makes them difficult to work with, and started his journey in Canada on an inspirational footing. The design included unique features like a hexagon-shaped deck platform and a triangular pergola, providing a thrilling yet satisfying challenge. The density of these woods makes them extremely durable and long-wearing offering outstanding longevity to the project. Mississagua Decks & Trim continues to incorporate them in the variety of decking materials they work with today, which also includes other exotic hardwoods such as Garapa, heat-treated Ash, PVC, Composites, and Cedar.

After a stint of union jobs utilizing his skills as a finish carpenter, it was in 2016, on receiving his citizenship, that John decided the time was right to once again establish his own business. During this time he met the woman he knew he would marry, and together they now have four beautiful children, reinforcing the powerful idea of all a sense of ‘home’ can mean.  He also continued playing the team sports he enjoyed during his childhood, and still plays golf to this day. From these influences derived from both his professional and personal life, John knew he wanted to build a company that recognized the strength of collaborative effort. This includes a commitment to community, recognition of individuality, and an expectation of delivering nothing but the best, which always starts with honesty and transparency.

Mississagua Decks & Trim sought and gathered a team of skilled builders. This assembled team of expert craftsmen offers over 60 years of combined experience and noted attention to detail, with every aspect of that brought to each project undertaken by the company. An initial consultation is done for every outdoor living space crafted by Mississagua Decks & Trim and is only the beginning step of a personalized approach, which is carried through every phase of the project, from design to permits and down to each finishing detail.  The mandate of the team also includes ensuring that the client has confidence in the journey from start to finish about their property development and enhancements. Each project team consists of a Lead and Assistant Carpenter who can work both independently and collectively depending on the size of the job. However, the expertise of the entire company is behind every project it undertakes.

John’s own initial career as a finish carpenter comes through in the impeccable detail of the end result. Beyond decks, the company grew to offer more tailored enhanced outdoor living space options, continuously inviting ideas from the clients themselves from any source of inspiration, whether it is from a magazine or their own imagination. The company includes landscaping designs, play areas like custom-built sandboxes and at-home basketball practice courts, as well as a variety of garden accents, privacy screens, railings, and a multitude of other elements to turn your outdoor areas into the personal oasis you’ve always dreamt of.

Mississagua Decks & Trim approaches every job with the belief that strong values and quality work should always be the guiding principle. They believe in honesty, transparency, clear communication, and always exceeding each and every client’s expectations.

“My personal belief will always be to offer the best service and the highest quality product that the client deserves, and that belief will be demonstrated through every piece of wood we touch.”
